Christmas decorations...

This week I have been planning for the big C... That's right... Christmas!
Here's a sample of the Christmas trees below. Also made stars, hearts and mini stockings.

Quite a simple process really but sometimes it's good to have someone tell you what to do!

1. Cut out the Christmas shape of your choice on card and using tailors chalk draw around your image on your chosen fabric (remember you will need two per decoration.)

2. Cut out your image from your fabric leaving a 1 cm gap around the image.

3. Get some wadding (to use as filling) and cut out a smaller version of your Christmassy shape. Also cut out a loop of ribbon to use as a hanger for your decoration.

4. Line up and make a sandwich with fabric either side and wadding in the middle. Make sure both pieces of fabric have the pretty side facing out!. Pin it! Pin ribbon loop into decoration at the top.

5. Sew together using the chalk outline as a guide. Try not to sew over wadding. Stop to tuck it in if it hangs over. You want to have it all enclosed when finished.

6. Last step- when all seen together, get some pinking shears and cut around the decoration (this is why you left a gap when cutting). Be careful not to cut ribbon off!

7. Step back and admire. Also feel free to add buttons, bows and bells!

Tip- if you are making anything with eyes (gingerbread man, father christmas etc) do a quick hand stitch before sewing together (after step 2).

Think that's covered all the steps.

Will try to add other pics of the others I've done!

Have fun!

Children's centres, sewing summit and fabric shopping!

In a few days baby and I will be heading down to the Florence Park centre in Oxford. Looking forward to it and it will be good for little one to meet other babies (she's 9 months now!) and it will be nice to meet other mums and share experiences. I'm a little worried about it being a bit "cliquey" but if I don't try I'll never know. I'll report back on my experiences!

So it's the grand sewing summit in Utah next week... A few days of sewing, learning new skills and meeting other sewing peeps. Sounds great, I'm very jealous and would love to go next year. I look forward to hearing feedback from everyone on how it goes...

Ok, so once again I have bought a load of fabric when I wasn't planning to! Pink castle fabrics in the USA had a discount code of 15% off with the code SPIN15 and I'm a sucker for a bargain! Got this really cute fabric from the "out to sea" collection. Plan is to make a pair of curtains and matching cushions for little girl's room... Stay tuned for pics...

Also got some great charm packs from Simply Solids this week - " so stitchy" and "oh deer" can't wait to use them to sew up something fab! Also if you are quick they have a 15% off discount code- OCT2012 that runs out tonight!!!

If you are on Facebook, why not pop over and give Mia's House page a like. There could be a £5 gift voucher in it for you! When they get to 100 like a £5 gift voucher will be given away - with Christmas coming up its definitely worth a like!

Welcome...

Hello!
So a bit about me and this blog...
I love talking and sharing my experiences and so thought it was high time I started up a blog.
I live in Oxford, where I have many roles... Wife, mother and now I have started up a small family business (with my mother in law...i know, I know but we get on really well!) where we sew and knit all types of items.  (if you are interested please check out our website www.miashouse.co.uk  - shameless plug I know!)

However, the views and comments on here are all my own which is why I feel the need to branch out so I can twitter on about all types of stuff - it will be interesting though- promise!

Some things will be baby related , some will be crafting related, some to do with pretty things and interesting things I find on my travels (both physically and also in the online world.)

Ok... So first post done, please feel free to follow me on twitter or subscribe to the blog. Hopefully see you again soon!
